One of the most frequent repairs we undertake in conservatories involves fixing box gutters. Typically, box gutters leak due to mistakes made during the initial installation, but they can also fail because of aging installations or the use of subpar materials.
Experiencing a drip from your box gutter during every rainfall is frustrating, and the repercussions of such leaks can be severe, particularly when they dampen your plaster or window boards, leading to degradation and higher repair costs.
To fix a box gutter leak, we first need to pinpoint the exact source of the water intrusion. Most often, the water drips internally from one end of the gutter, but that doesn’t always indicate the entry point into the conservatory, making it crucial to trace the leak accurately. Next, we prepare the box gutter for repair by clearing out all debris and removing any excess water, creating a suitable base for our work. Once the gutter is dry, we proceed to eliminate any old sealants that may have previously been applied to stop the leak. This step can be challenging without the right tools, particularly given the confined working space. We then ensure that all areas requiring repair are properly prepared by creating a key for the materials to adhere securely to the gutter.
After completing these preparations, we can apply our sealant tape and finalize the repair, confident that water will no longer penetrate the conservatory through those joints.
