Buying a Composite Door
When looking for a new composite door it can become very overwhelming as there are so many options, we have made a list below of the options that you might face with an explanation of what they mean:
Low Aluminium Threshold:
A low aluminium threshold is very common nowadays and is used to try to make the door threshold as close to the floor height as possible, this means there is less to step over so reducing the chances of tripping over, the other reason for having one is so that wheelchair access is available.
Lever/Lever Handle:
A Lever Lever handle is the most common type of handle on a composite door and it is called this because it acts as a lever internally and externally to allow you to lift the handle and engage the locking points before turning the key.
Lever Pad Handle:
A lever pad handle has a lever type handle internally and a pad handle externally, the pad handle is rounded, these types of handle are generally used with a split spindle so that when the door is closed behing you it will stay closed on the latch and it cannot be opened from outside without the key. these handles are available with a fixed spindle but are not very popular.
AV2 – AV3 Slam Lock:
The AV2 and AV3 slam locks are very similar and both serve the same purpose, but the AV3 lock has the added feature of a walk through mode, this is operated by a catch on the keep that can be flipped to allow the door to not lock behind you, handy if you are in and out of the house regularly and dont want to have to find your keys to get in. The idea of both of these locks is that when you close the door behind you, the locking points engage and the door is locked just as with a traditional timber door and yale lock. These locks are very popular on the more modern types of door where a bar handle is required.
Flag Windows:
Some entrance doors have a dwarf wall beside them, generally between 500-900mm high and then to make up the gap to the height of the door a flag window is used, these can either be fixed panes of glass or they can be openers with either clear or obscured glazing.
Side Panels:
Some door openings are much wider than the standard 900mm and if your opening is over 1000mm then generally a side panel will be required, this can either be in the form a full height glazed side panel, a glazed side panel with a mid-rail or a matching composite side panel, if you are looking for lots of light then a glazed side panel is best but if you are looking for the side panel to match your door in style and colour then a matching composite side panel will be required.
